Gerard has an edge to his voice, that none of the other Phantoms possess, that gives him a rock vibe. And my friends and family who watched alongside.Įdit: I just heard Gerard and Ramin in comparison back to back to answer more precicely why people like Gerard as the Phantom.

I am not musically trained (I love opera but I am just not trained) - nor do I believe that the movie's goal was to be seen by musically trained audience or anything but it was my favorite movie and I think he had a great voice, I always got chills. It's really hard to find actors who can potray the range of emotion Gerard did on the part and are musically trained at the same time, that is the reason we see the same actors in hollywood, play in musicals again and again, because it's a movie and not theater. I understand the casting choice, their next in line would be Hugh Jackman, so I bet Gerard was a better option.

Usually they choose actors and train them in musicals (in movies at least) because at the end of the day it's a movie not an opera.

If I am not mistaken it's a musical, not an opera, but it can be confusing because of the title and the theme. I understand your approach, I guess different tastes. I think many people liked him because he had a rawness in his voice that brought up emotions. I have heard many others- I even saw it on theater and I just don't like the operatic approach as much, cause at the end of the day he ( Erik ) was self taught. If they'd have thought more about production quality than getting asses in seats - particularly those attracted to men - I'm sure the movie would jump up a whole tier. You cannot take creative liberty with the voice of the phantom because then it makes no sense. I mean for god's sake, he literally taught Christine how to sing opera. I'm tired of trying to see his grating voice as some reflection of his character when the character's voice is literally supposed to be hypnotically good. His voice, tone wise, is not an acting choice unlike the others. Maybe he could do a mean cover of sweet caroline at karaoke night, but he cannot match, or even be compared to the 50+ other phantoms that have performed. He did well with what he was given (the film is plagued with awful direction and writing too). I get his choices, his voice is good, I'm just not a fan.īutler however, god jesus fuck he's awful.Īcting wise? He's fine. I'm not too hot on Michael Crawford, but I get it. Most have been pretty consistent, but some have been way out there in how they portray the Phantom. To cut a long story short, they sound entirely different, they sing the songs (as in acting the songs out) differently too. I've done a lot of looking into different iterations of the phantom and how the actors approached it because I find that part quite interesting. Big fan of musical theatre, love Phantom.
